While a Brazilian butt lift has “lift” in the name, it’s much different than a facelift or a breast lift. Where those procedures remove excess skin and lift the tissues, a Brazilian butt lift uses liposuction and fat transfers to add volume and shape to the buttocks, helping you to achieve a more balanced overall figure.
What is A Brazilian Butt Lift?
A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) consists of two different steps: taking fat from one area of the body and inserting it into the buttocks area.
The first step is liposuction. The fat will be loosened and suctioned out of the area you want it removed from (typically the abdomen, thighs, or back). From there, the fat will be transferred to the hips and buttocks to give you the shape you’re looking for.
The procedure allows you to contour and shape two areas of your body: the area the fat is being taken from and the buttocks where the fat is being transferred to.
Who is a Good Candidate For a Brazilian Butt Lift?
There are some qualifications that can make someone a good candidate for a Brazilian butt lift, including:
- Be finished developing
- In good physical health
- Having realistic expectations
- Having enough excess body fat to transfer
- Looking to reshape and contour your buttocks area
- Are a nonsmoker
The Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure
At the start of the Brazilian butt lift procedure, you’ll be given general anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable during the entire surgery. That said, if you’re only in need of a small amount of fat transferred, local anesthesia may be used instead.
Once the anesthesia kicks in, an incision is made in the treatment area, and a small stainless steel instrument called a cannula will be used to loosen the fat from the skin and muscle. It will then be suctioned out using a vacuum. The fat is then purified.
Next, incisions are made in the buttocks, and the fat is injected into specific areas in and around the buttocks. All the incisions will then be closed, and you will start your recovery process.
Recovery
As you begin your recovery, your incisions will be wrapped, and a compression band will be applied to help with swelling. You’ll be able to go home the same day, but you’ll need a family member or a friend to drive you home and watch over you for at least 24 hours.
Before you leave, Dr. Andrews will give you detailed instructions on how to take care of your incisions and when you can return to work and other physical activities. Most patients take about one to two weeks off work. Light exercise can resume about four weeks into the recovery process.
As you heal, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and soreness at the treatment sites, but pain medication can easily alleviate that discomfort. You will also have follow-up appointments with Dr. Andrews to ensure you are healing properly and that no complications pop up.
The whole recovery process typically lasts six to eight weeks, with the final results showing up once the swelling has fully diminished.
